Design Practice Part 2 Evaluation...

What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?
Skills that i thought i was entering this module with were organisation and researching, also the ability to record the stages of my development and analyse each idea as i am working. Yet i found that even these skills were tested once again.

From the start of these briefs i was very aware of the timescales that i had allocated each brief. This mainly due to the timetable that i had created at the start of this brief, and although this changed as the briefs developed i stuck to it and worked according to what i had stated. In turn, this aided in me being able to co-inside with time available to me in the screen print studios and the chance to book the time i needed in the digital print room.

Before the challenge of three briefs was thrown at me, i thought that my recording of three briefs was a skill i could be proud of, but this too i feel has improved. I believe that as my organisation has to have been at the best it can i have been able to record and show the development of my ideas more, this i also feel has given me more confidence in my designs as i have developed my work much more, mainly in the longest brief, as i used trial and error more within designs and worked much more on the outcome i wanted to create. Producing a much better outcome than the initial idea. I am proud of these outcomes i have produced due to this.

What approaches to generating work and solutions to problems have you developed and how have they helped?
As i have stated i believe strongly that the development of my work has become an important section of my work, i feel that within the briefs i have explored much more of this, and it has helped my improve the quality of design produced.

Wagamama - i remembered feedback from the good brief about exploring more development with layouts, so i pushed the development on thumbnails throughout this brief and found that it helped to create a layout i was proud of.

Sainsbury's - Although the development was simple and not too different each time i feel that the little details i changed about the designs helped improve the final outcome. Also experimenting with different materials pushed the detail in the design.

Homebase - i feel that this is one where the experimentation paid off most, from when working with logos to the layout of each piece, i wanted to try lots of variations and mock-ups so that i could evaluate my designs as i went along. I was very critical with the designs and became pedantic about the small details when reviewing the development.

What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?
I think that overall i am pleased with the outcomes of the designs. Although i would always love to work into each brief more, i think that from these the strengths that have shown up this time are organisation, time management, commitment, development and recording of my work. I know that time management and organistion come hand in hand but i feel that they have both been successful, as i have had to stay organised and focused to stick to the timescale of each brief. I also feel that i have been more productive, this especially in the last 2 weeks, when i spent more time in the studio, i also found that getting in early in the morning enabled me to get focused and on a roll before the studio got busy and i got distracted. This is something i would like t do more often as i feel that i was able to get most out of my time. As for the development and recording i feel that his was down to organisation. Proving that keeping organised and being more aware of time is something i will have to keep on top of next time.

This also meant that in the last week i wasn't rushed or working all nights to organise my work and make sure that the development of my ideas was shown, as i knew as i was working i was making sure then. Creating an easier life for myself.

What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how could you exploit these more fully?
The weaknesses that I think I have had with this module is having to juggle three briefs, although i was well planned and organised it is a new concept to me and one that i am sure than i will adapt to in the future. Also, after doing music in the mountains earlier in the year, and being surprised at how successfully it worked out, i thought that a one day brief would have been an optimal choice for me, but i seemed to wimp out, this is something i need to concor and try to get more confidence in doing.

I also wanted the opportunity to mention that i believe within the homebase brief i could have designed the back of the packets much more thoroughly, this as it wasn't my intention to design the back, as of the time limit but i decided otherwise, this i feel makes them seem rushed and i would have liked to spend more time on them. Ideally i would have liked to use illustrations to coincide with the front f the designs, this i would say is a weakness i need to consider the designs and the time i have more thoroghly.

Identify five things that you will do different next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?
Although i have stated that i have been successful in being visual and recording, i think that this could still improve as i would like it to be in more depth, so that my journey is clearer to an audience.

The timetable which i stuck to once i had adjusted it to fit the new timescales i wanted, worked out so well and gave me more opportunities to do more constructive work. If i was to have thought more about this at the start i might have had more of an opportunity to get started faster. This is something i will do at the start of each module as it has been so sucessful after the first week.

In addition, being more productive in the studio is something i want to persue more, so making the effort to get in and settled that bit earlier.

Lastly i feel that i benefitted from working in different styles, such as hand-drawn for Sainsbury's and Computer vectors for Homebase, this i feel gave me more variation in my work, and is something i would like to carry on more with. Also in producing work, although i did produce some outcome, i would like to make the time to produce a complete fial outcome, as i feel more confident when i have the design infront of me.

Final Piece Evaluation
I know that this is extra but i have some things that i want to say about the final pieces that i have created for each of these briefs.

Sainsbury's - as the longest brief that i have done i thought that it was a good developed design, but i would have liked to produce the final outcome, although this was slightly my own fault, due to not having asked about canvas in the print rooms earlier than i did, the material i wanted was simply unavailable. But i liked the set that i created. Lastly, i loved the alternative illustrated style that i chose to run with.

Homebase - This is a brief that i think i did well to achieve in the time i set, although i iwhs i would have had more time to develop more of the designs and improve what i could. But overall i like the designs and the fact that they were produced and seen in context.

Wagamama - This is another in which i would have loved to finalise and have the design on the apron, so that the final affect on the apron could have been seen, I think that it was a good idea as a promotion and one that i am proud of. I represented it as best i could without the aspects i needed to create it.

This is a revised Timetable, as i found that the first timetable didn't fit to how i wanted to work. This as once i had developed my ideas more for the briefs i needed more time on Sainsbur's are i got more into it and Less on Wagamamas as the idea i had developed was simple and a good idea to lead. Also as i was enjoying working with Sainsbury's i wanted to develop more to get a better result.

These are the final designs for the Bags that i am going to create for the Sainsbury's brief. I wanted to develop a set of designs rather than just one individual design. Overall i prefer the final design as it is the most detailed and illustrated design.

For the homebase brief, i decided to travel up to the store in Bradford and find out what they already have and their designs that they have for other areas of the store. I think this is something that will help, as the product needs to fit into the designs they already have, or do i need to make them different?

Inspiration for my Sainsbury's bag design idea. My thoughts for the Sainbury's was to play with Type Illustrations, this to highlight the effect the use of plastic bags etc...on the environment.
This is some of the desgins i have found while researching into the idea.
Dairy Milk, this is so well known i thought it might make a good idea, but adapting it to fit my concept.

I do like how the Dairy Milk is so clear and obvious, but i think that like the other two designs you could make it more subtitle and more illustration looking, but would you still get the message across? This is something i might need to work on.

Week 1:
This week is planned out as i want it to be, i have given myself the time i need to sort out initial ideas and research, so i can move fast with the short briefs and get ideas sorted for the longer briefs

Week 2: This is the main week on Sainbury's and i realise i needed alot more time on the brief as what i hope to produce will take time, this is why i have allocated most of the week to the brief, but still touching on the other two so that i can slowly develop those ideas.
Week 3: This is the last week on Wagamamas so i have allocated the time on that brief, alothough i haven't decided what i will do yet, i want to do this the week before so i can be more precise and manage the week better. I also work on the Homebase brief so that i am rely to be producing designs in the last 2 weeks.
Week 4 and 5 are colour coded but like the above i want to fill in the time to a dedicated aspet of the design, so will do this the week before.

Design Practice part 2....

For part 2 of this module we have to choose 3 briefs from past award options. These from D&AD YCN and ISTD . I have chosen Sainsbury's from YCN, Wagamamas also from YCN and lastly Homebase from D&AD. These all appealed to me as they are packaing and promotion, this is what i have wanted the time to do. I have said that packaing is something i am very interested in, and this is my time to see if i am any good at it. i am looking forward to this Challenge.

Timescale:
I am thinking of timescale, and i think that it would be something like this:

Sainbury's: 8 days
Wagamamas: 15 days
Homebase: 29 days.

This as i want to spend a day on each in the first week, so i can et ideas sorted, and learn to make my decisions fast and improve on my ability to be decisive, as i think that this can sometimes affect my designs, as i spent too much time deciding and taking time off designing! This time i am going to give myself the best chance i can.

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

The body of work I think shows the skills that I have developed. This collaborative brief was targeted at improving our collaborative skills, in this respect i have learnt to compromise more when working in pairs, and also how to be more open with my thoughts. In addition I think I have learnt more about how live briefs work, and have adapted more to the narrow and more specific briefs. Something I did not think I was good at before.

Another skills that this collaboration brief has brought me is something that I have learnt from working with James. One of James’ strengths is layout, something which I can do but not as well as him, so from this brief I have learnt from James’ skills and hopefully in return i have been able to teach him something.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

We started by spending time thoroughly researching into our company, the brand but most importantly the ethics that are behind the company. We spent the time doing this as we wanted to get the product right for the company and make sure that we were producing something appropriate. Once we were both confident with the target audience and the background information we started to develop ideas on the type of outcome that we wanted to produce.

We developed a range of ideas so that we could narrow down, as we wanted the chance to explore before narrowing down to out final idea. This gave us the chance to trial some of the ideas out to see how successful they would be.
Once we had our final idea, we made sure that we spent enough time on each element of the book so that it was at the highest standard possible. We pushed our development so that we were totally happy that it fit with the company style and ethics.

Another important part that we work on was the stock, as was found out that recycling was an important part of our company, we researched into stocks available to us, as this would be a vital part of our final book.

In addition we have always been in a lot of contact and spent the last few minutes of the day arranging what we wanted to achieve by the end of the next day. This i feel helped keep our time management under control and also keep us focused throughout the project.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

One definite strength that I think that has come from this brief is the time management towards the end of the brief. In the last evaluation I mentioned that next time I would change the fact that there was little time for printing and final presentation of work. And this time we managed to allow enough time to print, photograph and design and create boards for the final presentation.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

This is where I would like to write that I think I have been more decisive. However I think that I have got lost within this project, I think that I have played a more submissive role within decision-making. This started to change towards the middle of the brief, and I started to feel more involved.
Looking back i would have liked to try and improve the style of the brand rather than sticking to the style that they had, or at least have experimented with the style a bit more.

5. Identify four things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

I think that the time management was good within this brief, as I had managed it and stuck to the plan, which proved too much at times. For example, I think that I had left the development of the designs too little time, and too much to the research and mock-ups of empty books. Although the interactive book designs were a very important part.
I would have liked to feel more into the project from the start of the brief, i don't know why i felt submissive but i would change that, as maybe i would feel more confident with the final outcome of the design.

After we had made out final products we were eager to go out and get some photos of them in use. As James found a nice looking delicatessen we thought that we would rather have the photos in a unique, friendly and calm setting, rather than in a big national chain such as WHSmiths. Pickles and Potter delicatessen was our destination which had a nice setting for photographing feel good drinks and we thought that the staff would be more helpful and willing to let us do our photography.

When we were photographing for the book and the presentation boards, we were chatting about getting it in the ideologic place that we want people to be using it, or at least to set the scene. These we needed and wanted to use to draw attention to our first sheet. We decided to got up to hyde park as it was nice weather and people were sitting around having bbq's and picnics. We printed the final product in the dungeon and made it up. Along with the feelgood vouchers, tokens, and including the promtional aspects such as the wobbler and the bottle tags.

The colour has made a vast improvement on the development and mock up trials. Also considering the stock has added something to the design. I feel that it fits in with feelgoods ethics. Also the fact that the different weights of paper have meant that it is a very good quality of a final piece.

Again after the Crit and the colour feedback we came to the decision that what we had developed for the fold out was very bland, and we needed to brighten and liven it up more. From the colour selection we got from the bottles of feelgood we added more colour to the designs that we did for the fold out.We these together and made joint decisions on the best effect.

After the feedback on the Crit we learnt that to make it more interesting and visually interesting. This by adding colour. We have tried to add a lot of colour, but it became very overpowering and took away from the book, so we moved on to reduce the colour on the pages, and found that it was successful in becoming visually interesting, and as Lorenzo put it added "juiciness".

When we narrowed down we decided create a book token and the vouchers for good deeds, these would enable the "pass it on" theme that was included in the brief. From this we thought about how people get the book in the first place, we thought of including a tag on the bottle that was the same as the book tokens

As part of our book we decided to design a book token as a tag on the bottle, as a form of advertising too. This enables the individual who buys a bottle of drink gets a book, also including these inside the book so that they can be give out for others to collect the feelgood book. We designed some rough ideas of book tokens as a start, but found that we wanted them to be more colourful and fit with the book design.

After working separately on different styles of vouchers. With me working on the vector style vouchers and jimmy was working on the hand drawn style. We wanted to see which works best,
We decided to go with the vector style, but again needing to teak them.

As Jimmy is better at layout that me, i let him play around with the final vouchers, improving them so that they looked better, than the initial development.

We both decided to work on different types of vouchers, We both initially worked on the photography style of vouchers, and then i moved onto the vector style and Jimmy moved onto the hand drawn style of vouchers.

I have developed five of the 10 final vouchers so far and we now have the tough choice of choosing vouchers. I personally think that the vector style work better for the feelgood but i do like the quality and the feel that the hand drawn vouchers have. We need to choose....

Final Book Format...

After the range of mock ups and trials on the type of book format, we decided that this one has worked the best. As it is the most interactive and will hold the coupons and vouchers best. It is small, compact, and hopefully will encourage people to carry it with them and make the best use of it.

We realise as we are designing and developing the contense that it might need tweaking, For example, the section that holds the vouchers and coupons will need changing as as it stands it is not easy to get into. So editing this to make it more functional will be one of the tasks we need to do.

This fold out book is one that we really like and one that we would like to work around. This book we discussed in the Crits and got a good response from. However we would like to
experiment with the design and edit it a little so that it is more suited to our design. The fold out section is the aspect that we have found the most visually interesting and also interactive for the audience.

However the other aspect that we wanted to think about is the size. As we need to consider the fact that it will be given away with the drink and we want people to be able to carry it around, so that they can have the feelgood tips with them at all times. This is why we were thinking pocket or approx an A6 size.

Summary of Ideas before Crit...

In preparation for the Crit we decided to get together and analyse and discuss the work we had done over the weekend. This consisted of evaluating the book designs that i had found, the content that James had experimented with, also analyse the fonts that James had found that we thought might be relevant.
When we came to sumerise the idea for the Crit we decided to produce...
*A book design that could be collected for free from a POS stand in the Stores where you can buy the drinks.
*The Stickers that would be given in the book.
*An interactive and fun Website - the address got from the free book.

After this summery, i decided to look at the types of Website that we would like to create.
We decided we wanted it to be visually interesting and also have the potential to hold a space where we can have games, a blog type page where people can interact, and upload images etc. The main prioty to get people to chat and interact.

Feelgood Website Design:

Helpless Romantic Website:
This Site not included for the interactive element, as there is none as it being a shop and gallery based site. But added for it's style that it kept interesting throughout the whole site. It make me ant to look more at it. Not unlike the Feelgood site, it is always kept interesting.

Howies Website:
This website i chose not as an interactive website but as another ethical site.

Cream Egg Website:
This site i chose as it appeared as a very interactive site, although not having a chat area, such as Blog type page, where people can interact it does have the games and the fun element that we seek to add.

Next, I found these few websites, which are based around games,
Firstly Autopsy, in which you are involved in helping carry out an Autopsy, its mainly educational but it has the idea of making the audience interact with it.

Another is this Mr.Picasso Head site, in which you as the audience are encouraged to create a painting in the style of Picasso himself. I found this fun for a certain amount of time but after a while it became more annoying as i felt restricted, this is something to keep in mind if we are going to create games, or an interactive part of the Site.

This Site i would say is not much different from the Picasso site, as i did this for a while and i became bored of it. Although it is fun for sometime.

Communication in Websites:
These sites or pages are things that i have found that encourage people to take part, or talk and interact.

Feelgood Blog:
This is a site that feelgood have designed to keep with with the followers, however we want one that the audience can be able to add to and join in with. But this is good as it is something that we have noticed they are missing, and that their rivals have got to offer.

Innocent Family Page:
This is something i found that you can join on the Innocent family and be able to feel apart of the innocent family, however you can still upload your images and add stuff to the Pin board. I am curious to find out the benefits of being in the "family". I will let you know.

This weekend we have agreed to:
*Extend on our initial ideas and test by means or mock-ups and trials.
*Research further into existing relevant campaigns that get the public involved such as people like Danny Wallace, who unintentionally created a cult, where he got people to join in and go out and do unexpected good deeds and random acts of kindness. Read Karma Armies Post.
*Researching more into the brand, this by means of product research, to see where it is sold and cost wise. Comparing it to existing drinks that may rival it.
*To research into designs, such as books and leaflet designs and consider how we can make ours more interactive and interesting, and encourage people to pass it on.

All this so that when we get together we can communicate our findings and improve and develop on our initial ideas and concepts.

We have started this brief by analysing the mandatory requirements and all the information provided, also researching into the YCN website and then the competitions , such as Innocent and other smoothie and drinks companies. Also researching into what people find fun and what makes them happy, this in form of a questionnaire.
All this to get a better understanding of what we need to consider, also to see what is already out there...we want it to be different, fun and ineractive.
Also wanting to focus on the theme of Passing on the feelgoodness...therefore designing something that can be passed on. We need it to be interesting so that people are incouraged to participate and talk about it, this as the cheapest of advertising is word of mouth! We need to get people to talk about it.

The brief states that we need to;

— Have Fun. If working on this brief isn’t enjoyable then something is going wrong.
— Keep it Simple. Because the best ideas always are.
— Be Bold. Feel Good Drinks are up for big ideas, we haven’t got the biggest budgets though, so the ideas really need to offer bang for their buck.
— Be Original. The best ideas are the memorable ones, so aim to do something really unique that will cut through

I have created this third blog that i have created to exhibit the creative partnership work that we are doing at the moment. With my partner Jimmy Edmondson. On this blog i will post the work that i have done in my part of the brief and i will be keeping it up to date alongside Jimmy's.
